Shmi Skywalker Lars first appeared in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.
She was the mother of Anakin Skywalker. Shmi was a slave on the desert planet Tatooine, owned by Watto, a Toydarian junk dealer. She and her son lived a meager existence, working to earn their freedom.
Shmi possessed a unique connection to the Force, as Anakin was conceived without a father. She nurtured Anakin's inherent mechanical skills and his compassionate nature. Shmi ultimately gave Anakin up to the Jedi, believing it was his destiny to bring balance to the Force.
Years later, Anakin, now a Jedi Padawan, returned to Tatooine to find Shmi had been freed by Cliegg Lars, a moisture farmer, and they married. Sadly, she was later kidnapped by Tusken Raiders and tortured, eventually succumbing to her injuries shortly before Anakin found her.
